The Tucson Observer is organizing boycott of businesses that supported prop 102 here in AZ.
At Princeton Univ. students are organizing a petition to deny freshman the use of sidewalks. It’s called Princeton Prop 8 and points out the absurdity of discrimination. Candace Gingrich pens a scathing letter to big bro Newt about his hate speech. SF Mayor Gavin Newsom asks the California Supreme Court to reject Prop 8 citing the Loving vs Virginia case from 1967 that ended states bans on interracial marriage. In its decision, the court wrote:
“Marriage is one of the “basic civil rights of man,” fundamental to our very existence and survival…. To deny this fundamental freedom on so unsupportable a basis as the racial classifications embodied in these statutes, classifications so directly subversive of the principle of equality at the heart of the Fourteenth Amendment, is surely to deprive all the State’s citizens of liberty without due process of law. The Fourteenth Amendment requires that the freedom of choice to marry not be restricted by invidious racial discrimination. Under our Constitution, the freedom to marry, or not marry, a person of another race resides with the individual and cannot be infringed by the State.”

Moments ago it was announced that Fed Reserve President Timothy Geithner will be tapped as the Obama’s new Sec of Treasury. Wall St responded with a late rally to finish up 494 points.
Chaos broke out today at the arraignment hearing of the Texas Two, Cheney and Gonzales. Apparently the DA was pounding the table and yelling at the judge. Frozen water was discovered on Mars. Michael Jackson converts to Islam. White House defenders cite Bush as one of the great Human Rights Presidents. Somali pirates planning a leverage buyout of Citigroup. Congress moves to prevent Bush’s pardons. Sarah Palin managed to outdo herself when it comes to embarassing public appearances. AG Michael Mukasey collapses on stage during a speech. Oddly enough only one of these stories is NOT true. Can you tell which one ?

Our loss, America’s gain ? The word is out that President –elect Barack Obama will ask Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano to head the Department of Homeland Security. Many are citing Janet’s experience as a border state governor and as the state’s first woman to serve as Attorney General. I have no doubt Janet has the toughness and the talent to take on the monumental task of restructuring and re-organizing DHS. But the downside is that puts SOS jan brewer in the governor’s office with a solid republican majority in the state house.
The other important story from today is the developments regarding the big 3 automakers proposed bailout. Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi held a press conference outlining their plan moving forward. So did Carl Levin and his group of, ahem, bipartisan senators.
At 6PM local musicians Dakota and the Black River Bandit to discuss their activism and music. Their first recording Reagan Lives is available at myspace.com/dakotaandtheblackriverbandit

South Park creators plan a Broadway show lampooning the Mormons.

Are you as angry as I am about the most recent capitulation from the spineless Dems ? How large a majority does the Dem caucus need before it grows a spine ? Will it take 65 members , 70 or even 75 ? With our first glimpse into the workings of the new senate we find more of the same gutless and shameful behavior from our side of the aisle. Traitorous bastard Joe Lieberman keeps his chairmanship of the powerful Homeland Security and Oversight Committee.
I fully expect the republican minority to dominate the body for the next two years. How do we cope?

President-Elect Barack Obama appeared on 60 Minutes last night and America was reminded what an intelligent President sounds like. Congre.ss debates yet another bailout – this time it’s the Big 3 automakers. Racial fueled hate crimes are on the rise nationwide. Howard Dean turns 60 years old today and Ted Kennedy returned to the Senate to fight for healthcare reform. Tomorrow the Senate Democrats vote on Joe Lieberman’s role in the new congress. Call your Senator at 202-224-3121 and tell them how you feel about Joe.

It’s First Amendment Friday! All topics are on the table. The Republican Governors Association elected their new leadership. Was there anyone conspicuously missing from the new team of leaders ? You betcha there was. Senator Pat Leahy D-VT turned up the heat on Joe Lieberman hopes for holding his chairmanship. As the G-20 summit convenes in DC lame duck George W. Bush has become a cautionary tale for world leaders. The Catholic and Mormon churches find themselves in some potential trouble over the mixing of politics and religion.

The ever -shrinking GOP Governors group met today in Florida. Some has-been VP candidate grabbed all the attention and ticked off her fellow Governors. What was her name ? Elsewhere in actual news members of Congress expressed outrage over Hank Paulson’s press conference yesterday where he announced what many of us have suspected – he doesn’t know what the hell he is doing with the bailouts and no one is keeping track of where the money is going. Bush gave a speech in Manhattan congratulating himself for his love of the ‘free market’. The Mormon church continues to catch hell for it’s support of Prop 8 in California. In Alaska, Mark Begich (D) has pulled to an 814 vote lead over the aging and angry convicted felon who represents the Republicans of Alaska.
At 4:30 Rabbi Brad Hirshfield from CL&L joins us.
