At 3:30 MARCO IACOBONI, MD PhD, is a neurologist and neuroscientist originally from Italy. Today he is Professor of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, and Director of the ‘Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation laboratory’ of the Ahmanson-Lovelace Brain Mapping Center. Iacoboni pioneered the research on mirror neurons, the “smart cells” in our brain that allow us to understand others. Iacoboni is author of “Mirroring People: The New Science of How We Connect with Others”. His research has been covered by newspapers around the country, and he has appeared on ABC ‘Good Morning America’, the CBS ‘Early Show’, and NPR ‘Morning Edition’, among other TV and radio programs. MIRRORING PEOPLE: www.picadorusa.com/mirroringpeople At 4 PM Ellen Brown developed her research skills as an attorney practicing civil litigation in Los Angeles. In Web of Debt, her latest book, she turns those skills to an analysis of the Federal Reserve and “the money trust.” She shows how this private cartel has usurped the power to create money from the people themselves, and how we the people can get it back. Brown developed an interest in the developing world and its problems while living abroad for eleven years in Kenya, Honduras, Guatemala and Nicaragua. She returned to practicing law when she was asked to join the legal team of a popular Tijuana healer with an innovative cancer therapy, who was targeted by the chemotherapy industry in the 1990s. That experience produced her book Forbidden Medicine, which traces the suppression of natural health treatments to the same corrupting influences that have captured the money system. Brown’s eleven books include the bestselling Nature’s Pharmacy, co-authored with Dr. Lynne Walker, which has sold 285,000 copies. www.ellenbrown.com At 4:30 Kathy Kelly - Co-coordinator, Voices for Creative Nonviolence. Voices for Creative Nonviolence has deep, long-standing roots in active nonviolent resistance to U.S. war-making. Begun in the summer of 2005, Voices draws upon the experiences of those who challenged the brutal economic sanctions imposed by the U.S. and U.N. against the Iraqi people between 1990 and 2003. Voices participants rely on and have learned from experiences of those who have engaged in active nonviolent resistance to military might in the U.S. including draft resistance; resistance to the wars in Latin America; and resistance to nuclear weapons, such as the Plowshares resistance efforts. Voices draws upon the lessons gleaned from active participation in peace teams in Haiti, Yugoslavia, Palestine and Iraq. www.vcnv.org

His newest book, The Failure of Intelligence: The Decline and Fall of the CIA, was published in early 2008. His other books are Bush League Diplomacy: How the Neo-Conservatives Are Putting the Nation at Risk (2004), The Phantom Defense: The Case Against National Missile Defense (Praeger, 2001) and The Wars of Eduard Shevardnadze (Brassey’s, 2001).
At 4 PM Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz From 1967 to 1972, she was a full time activist living in various parts of the United States, traveling to Europe, Mexico, and Cuba. This time of her life and the aftermath, 1960-1975, is the story told in “Outlaw Woman: Memoir of the War Years”. Roxanne took a position teaching in a newly established Native American Studies program at California State University at Hayward, near San Francisco, and helped develop the Department of Ethnic Studies, as well as Women’s Studies. In 1974, she became active in the American Indian Movement (AIM) and the International Indian Treaty Council, beginning a lifelong commitment to international human rights. Her first published book, “The Great Sioux Nation: An Oral History of the Sioux Nation and its Struggle for Sovereignty”, was published in 1977 and was presented as the fundamental document at the first international conference on Indians of the Americas, held at United Nations’ headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. That book was followed by two others in the following years: “Roots of Resistance: A History of Land Tenure in New Mexico, 1680-1980″ and “Indians of the Americas: Human Rights and Self-Determination”. In 1981, she was asked to visit Sandinista Nicaragua to appraise the land tenure situation of the Miskitu Indians in the northeastern region of the country. Her two trips there that year coincided with the beginning of United States government’s sponsorship of a proxy war to overthrow the Sandinistas, with the northeastern region on the border with Honduras becoming a war zone and the basis for extensive propaganda carried out by the Reagan administration against the Sandinistas. In over a hundred trips to Nicaragua and Honduras from 1981 to 1989, she monitored what was called the Contra War. Her book, “Blood on the Border: A Memoir of the Contra War” was published in 2005.

At 3:30 Judy Rebick Judy Rebick is a well-known social justice activist, writer, broadcaster and speaker. She is currently the CAW-Sam Gindin Chair in Social Justice and Democracy at Ryerson University, and the publisher of rabble.ca, Canada’s most popular independent online news and discussion site. Judy is the author of several books and articles, most recently Transforming Power: From the Personal to the Political (Penguin 2009). Ten Thousand Roses: The Making of a Feminist Revolution (Penguin 2005). Her other books are Imagine Democracy (Stoddard 2000) and Politically Speaking (Douglas & McIntyre 1996). Transforming Power is the result of the last two or three years of Rebick’s travels around the world looking for new approaches to political and social action and her life time of experience as an activist. Rebick hopes it will inspire dialogue and action about the new paths to social change that we need to transform and create a better world. http://www.TransformingPower.ca

At 4 PM Noam Chomsky has been engaged in political activism all of his adult life and expressed opinions on politics and world events which are widely cited, publicized and discussed. Chomsky has in turn argued that his views are those which the powerful do not want to hear, and for this reason he is considered an American political dissident. Some highlights of his political views: • Power, unless justified, is inherently illegitimate. The burden of proof is on those in authority to demonstrate why their elevated position is justified. If this burden can’t be met, the authority in question should be dismantled. Authority for its own sake is inherently unjustified. An example of a legitimate authority is that exerted by an adult to prevent a young child from wandering into traffic. • That there isn’t much difference between slavery, and renting one’s self to an owner, or “wage slavery.” He feels that it is an attack on personal integrity that destroys and undermines our freedoms. He holds workers should own and control their own workplace, a view held (as he notes) by the Lowell Mill Girls. Very strong criticisms of the foreign policy of the United States. Specifically, he claims double standards in a foreign policy preaching democracy and freedom for all, while promoting, supporting and allying itself with non-democratic and repressive organizations and states such as Chile under Augusto Pinochet, and argues that this results in massive human rights violations. He often argues that America’s intervention in foreign nations, including the secret aid given to the Contras in Nicaragua, an event of which he has been very critical, fits any standard description of terrorism. http://www.chomsky.info

At 5 PM The Last Internationale is a radical folk duo (Edgey and Delila) from New York. Rejecting the belief that musicians should be mere entertainers or controversial only for the sake of healthy political discourse, the group prefers to mix music with (dis)organized resistance. Their intent isn’t simply to change your mind, but to inspire acts of rebellion that will bring down empires. TLI recently released their debut album, which is available on their website @ Manifestarecords.com as well as other online outlets such as CD Baby. Edgey is also a published author. His first book is titled Fighting for Freedom: Because A Better World is Possible, published by Planting Seeds Press and distributed by AK Press. His second book, Negative Dialectics, is scheduled for release next year. http://www.myspace.com/thelastinternationale

This new book by Jeane Manning and Joel Garbon is the citizens’ guide to the coming energy evolution. It introduces game-changing magnetic motors, zero point energy, water-as-fuel and other new-paradigm advances. With compelling stories of brave innovators and their rich variety of breakthroughs that can replace King Coal and oil wars, it makes the case for open-sourcing clean-energy inventions. C. L. Frazier, manager of New Energy Foundation, describes Breakthrough Power as “a much-needed, accessibly written update on the past, present and future of new energy technologies. Manning and Garbon illustrate how each of us can become a part of the ‘new energy movement’.”
Note: This English-language edition, published by Amber Bridge Books in 2009, is already being read in more than a dozen countries. Foreign publishers proposing to translate and distribute the book are welcome to send a contract offer to:

We also spoke with Colm O’Gorman author of Beyond Belief
In 1998 he launched a legal case against the Roman Catholic Church as a result of his experiences of sexual abuse at the hands of one of its priests when he was a teenager. He went on to sue the Bishop of his home diocese of Ferns and the Pope. In 2002 he took part in a BBC documentary, which told the story of his battle with the Roman Catholic Church. The film, Suing the Pope aired in March 2002 and resulted in the resignation of the Bishop of Ferns Dr Brendan Comiskey. Colm returned to live in Ireland in 2003 to found One in Four Ireland. In his role as Director of One in Four, he was instrumental in the establishment of the Ferns Inquiry, the first state investigation into clerical sexual abuse in Ireland. The inquiry investigated the management of child sexual abuse concerns and allegations by the Catholic Church and by State authorities. In 2005 he helped to establish Gorey Educate Together National School ; a multi-denominational, co-educational, child centred and democratically run primary school. Colm is a regular media commentator and contributor, has written extensively on social justice and human rights. He has made a number of documentary films, including the BAFTA awarding winning A Family Affair (2000), Suing the Pope (2002) and Sex Crimes and The Vatican which he presented for BBC Panorama in 2006. Colm’s work as a human rights defender is driven by a deep commitment to human rights and social justice and an abiding belief in the power of advocacy and activism, which challenges all of us to use our individual and collective voices to demand change where it is most needed. Colm served briefly as a member of Seanan Éireann, the upper house of the Irish parliament. He unsuccessfully contested the 2007 Irish general election and discovered that electoral politics was most definitely not his thing. In February 2008, Colm was appointed Executive Director of Amnesty International Ireland. His first book Beyond Belief was published by Hodder & Stoughton. It became an instant bestseller, reaching number one in the Irish non-fiction bestsellers list within a week of its publication.

At 3:30 William Paul Young is a Canadian author, best known for The Shack, a novel. Young was the eldest of four, born May 11th, 1955, in Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada, but the majority of his first decade was lived with his missionary parents in the highlands of Netherlands New Guinea (West Papua), among the Dani, a technologically stone age tribal people. These became his family and as the first white child and outsider who ever spoke their language, he was granted unusual access into their culture and community. By the time he was 6 he was flown away to boarding school. Young had written primarily as a way to create unique gifts for friends, until his wife repeatedly urged him to write something for their 6 children in order to put down in one place his perspectives on God and on the inner healing Young had experienced as an adult. The resulting manuscript (which later became The Shack), was intended only for his 6 kids and for a handful of close friends. Young initially printed just fifteen copies of his book. Two of his close friend encouraged him to have it published and assisted with some editing and rewriting in order to prepare the manuscript for publication. Rejected by 26 publishers, Young and his friends published the book under the name of their newly created publishing company, Windblown Media in 2007. The company spent only $300 in advertising ; word-of-mouth referrals eventually drove the book to number one on the New York Times trade paperback fiction best-seller list in June 2008.
”The Shack” was the top-selling fiction and audio book of 2008 in America through November 30.

Emily comes to SLDN from the American Bar Association where she spent two years as Assistant Director of the Section of Individual Rights and Responsibilities. During her time with the ABA, Emily worked on a variety of civil rights, human rights and social justice issues, lobbying on the state and federal levels and coordinating educational programming and publications for both the legal community and the general public.
In addition to her work on voting rights, Title IX, immigration reform, first amendment rights, and Native American issues, Emily spent a great deal of her time working on LGBT issues including marriage equality, adoption and foster care by LGBT parents, transgender employment discrimination, and LGBT asylum and immigration policies.
Emily earned her BA in history from the American University in 1996, and her J.D. from the Catholic University Columbus School of Law in 2004. While in law school, Emily clerked for a family law firm specializing in LGBT issues and a union-side labor and employment law firm. She served as a student-lawyer in the Families and the Law Clinic, where she focused on domestic violence and family law and developed and implemented community legal education programs for children and adults focusing on family law issues. Prior to attending law school, Emily spent three years with CARE, cultivating major individual and corporate donors, members of Congress and the diplomatic community and working with them to educate the general public about CARE’s work abroad.
at 5 PM Kevin Zeese is the executive director of VotersForPeace.US and a member of the Board of VelvetRevolution.US. He is an attorney who signed the complaints against 12 Bush-Cheney lawyers who facilitated torture. On Monday, May 18, 2009, a broad coalition of organizations dedicated to accountable government, and representing over one million members, filed disciplinary complaints with state bar licensing boards against twelve attorneys who advocated the torture of detainees during the Bush Administration. These detailed complaints with over 500 pages of supporting exhibits have been filed against John Yoo, Jay Bybee, Stephen Bradbury, Alberto Gonzales, John Ashcroft, Michael Chertoff, Alice Fisher, William Haynes II, Douglas Feith, Michael Mukasey, Timothy Flanigan, and David Addington. The complaints, filed with the state bars in the District of Columbia, New York, California, Texas and Pennsylvania, seek disciplinary action and disbarment. Copies of the complaints and exhibits are available at

http://www.disbartorturelawyers.com

.
The individually tailored complaints allege that the named attorneys violated the rules of professional responsibility by advocating torture, which is illegal under both United States and international law. Specifically, the Geneva Convention, UN Convention Against Torture, the Eighth Amendment, the Army Field Manual and the United States Criminal Code against torture and war crimes all prohibit torture of detainees. The memos written and supported by these attorneys advocating torture have now been repudiated by the Department of Justice, the White House, the Department of Defense and other experts in the field. The recently released Senate and Red Cross reports on detainee treatment provide uncontrovertible evidence that the torture techniques advocated by the attorneys were used on human beings over an extended period of time.
In testimony at a Senate hearing on Wednesday, Former State Department counselor Philip Zelikow told a committee panel that Bush administration officials engaged in a ‘collective failure’ on detention and interrogation of suspected terrorists. He called the torture memos “unsound” because “the lawyers involved … did not welcome peer review and indeed would shut down challenges even inside the government.” Another witness testified that the legal policy constituted “an ethical train wreck” because it violated constitutional, statutory and international law.
